Question

Can you use the internet in a free way, or is a lot of the content blocked?

Are there any other restrictions when it comes to using the internet?

How does it work at your school; can you use the internet whenever you want or only on set times?

Answer from DG1

Answer:We have internet facilities in our school. We are free to use internet in the school with the guidance of our teachers. We have computer lab in our school with internet facilities. Students are allowed to use them. We have ICT teacher who is supposed to be always with the students. We are shown educational web sites and we explore them and download necessary pictures, texts and music. If we want to download, we tell our teachers and they guide us. We tell them why these are necessary. We are sure about the blocked contents but sometimes we get the warning while opening a site written that there are blocked images in the sites. Are you sure to open it? Our teachers usually tell not to open the sites as there are many viruses in the blocked sites. Many parents usually don’t allow using internet at home but there are many parents they allow. They are considerate. We can use internet in school when we have an ICT class. We can also use them when any teacher likes to conduct a class using lesson making digital contents, i.e some videos are shown and related to topics. Moreover, during our off period or leisure, we can use internet and the ICT teacher guides us. Some students damage computers and malpractice those so teachers are careful about this.

Answer 1:

Yes, you can use internet in a free way. But there are some exceptions, for example you can’t go on someone else’s facebook or twitter, Because there is a password on his/hers account. And if there are some sites from the army with secret information on it, you can’t take advantage of that.

Answer 2:

Yes there are some restrictions, because you can’t put everything you think about other people on your facebook account so everybody can read it. You also can’t make a fun of other people by using the internet, because that is cowardly. And In school, I can use the Internet during lessons computer science, if the task should to access the Internet. If I need the Internet for personal use, then I can come after school.

Answer 3:

At school there are some restrictions for a few social network sites, so students don’t get distracted in the lessons. But when you have to use a site on the internet for school you really have to use that one site and no other sites. And you can also only use the internet in the lesson when the teacher said so and after school when you have to work in the school library.

Some websites are blocked at school. Websites that contain R-rated material and websites that depict violence and/or racism. Social networking websites such as Twitter or Facebook are not blocked.
Even though these websites are not blocked, it is not allowed to access these websites on a schoolcomputer - we can get in trouble if we do this and risk a ban on using the school computers.
We usually only use the computers during classes to practise languages on a website called WRTS or on other websites where we can practise our grammar. There isn't a real set time for us to do this, but one lesson lasts 50 minutes so we get 40 minutes to practise on the computer.

Our internet at our school are blocking certain websites.  I spoke to my computer classroom teacher and he has told and explained to me that we make use of router where they block certain websites that the learners would access by having a IP address associated with the website that will automatically block it.  There is a website where any person could visit and download a list of websites that should be blocked and the IP addresses would display there where one can then add them to your blocked list on your internet router.  This is merely to help and protect the innocence of us as learners and not allow learners to enter websites that are not suitable for them.  There are so many websites out there today that will have pornographic material not suitable for children and also people out there that want to steel information from people.  This will place the child in danger and personal information of the learner will be in danger and get into the wrong hands.  Like where they live and their email addresses.  Children has been kidnapped like this in other countries.

Internet at schools should be blocked for certain websites.  There are to many websites out there these days that are not suitable for children to view.  This is actually causing children to loose their innocence and learn about things that they should not really know about at the age that they are.  The school can make use of a rooter to block certain websites.  The ICT teacher can obtain these websites from a specific website on the internet that gives a list of website addresses that should be blocked by the rooter.  This will stop children from accessing websites that they should not be visiting and keep their innocence intact.  I don't really feel that all websites should be blocked, there are a lot of websites that host games that are actually educational to us as children and these should be left open for us to play games on and learn while we play.

Internet is not free in Ghana prompting many people to buy modems. After getting a modem it is free to get access to the Internet. A few hitches like not getting a higher with band in Ghana, not being able to watch YouTube videos unless one has Adobe Flash Player.

There are no restrictions in using Internet in school, just that most school don’t have their ICT centres connected to the Internet. In our school for instance, we haven’t been allowed to use the ICT centre after it has been newly refurbished. Before then we have a timetable for each class to visit the ICT laboratory at least once in a week. When there is a lesson on Internet usage, the teacher brings a modem and Laptop for the lesson to be effective.

Can you use the Internet in a free way, or is a lot of the content blocked?

We asked 20 pupils in our class about their Internet access. Most of them can spend unlimited period of time surfing the Internet.

We also found out, that some of our parents installed special programs on home computers, which block the access to particular webpages (e.g. pornography). Others set up passwords to avoid uncensored use of the Internet.

Are there any other restrictions when it comes to using the Internet?

Many students can’t use the Internet or play computer games if they get bad marks or misbehave at school. It’s very common and effective punishment used by our parents.

How does it work at your school; can you use the Internet whenever you want or only on set times?

We can use the Internet at school only during breaks. It is forbidden to use mobiles during lessons  (nobody brings notebooks or laptops to school). On the breaks we can go to the school library and use the computers that are there.

ANSWERS

Nowadays the Internet is easy to use. There are not so many  contents blocked. But some people (not many) still haven't got the Internet connection because they cannot afford it or they live in some distant parts of the country where there is ni Internet connection.

Yes, there are restrictions to the computer, made by our parents, e. g. you cannot use the Internet if you don't do your homework, if you lie, if you get bad marks at school etc. They can block your internet for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or maybe more. So if you are a »good« child you can use it, otherwise there are restrictions. This is what our schoolfriends say.

At school we use the Internet for watching videos, images or power points. We can learn different subjects on our school's website, too: English, Slovene, Music and Maths. If we have lessons off we can go to the computer classrooms and use the Internet there. We do some school work at home, too: surfing for some information, using dictionaries etc.

We asked 150 pupils (11-14 years old) about their Internet habits - how much time they spend on the Internet. Here are their answers.

              up to 30 minutes ....... 57                                                            an hour and a half ……………... 6

              up to 1 hour ……......... 57                                                            5 hours ………………………….…...... 3

              2 hours ……………......... 12                                                             more than 7 hours ……………... 3

              3 hours ……………......... 10                                                             invalid ………………………………..... 4

Yes, I can use the Internet in a free way in the evenings at home.
No other restrictions gone, when I use the internet at home. The only thing that in weekdays I can not use the Internet during the day, because my father works at a computer.
In school, I can use the Internet during lessons computer science, if the task should to access the Internet. If I need the Internet for personal use, then I can come after school.
What about restrictions in the school, they are on social networking sites, so that students are not distracted in class.
