Question

What types / forms of stimuli are required to educate this digital generation?

Answer from DG1

Answer: The use of technology has made it possible to think of a Digital Generation now. In fact, Digital Generation is a blessing of science and technology. We are born in the age when science has reached its peak in case of success. We are born in the age where we use computer, internet, mobile phones which have made the world digitalized.

Educating this Digital Generation is a big clallenge because they are far advanced that the traditional teachers. Teachers have to be trained before venturing to deal with the students of this generation. Also we need stimuli such as use of computers in class, visual learning aids, practical classes, teachers who are ICT learned and above all an environment which will be supportive for our learning.

ICT use in classroom will make our lesson easy and interesting. Our teachers can give us assignments which we can do using computers. Our teachers can conduct classes using ICT and digital contents. There are more visual items to learn from. Teachers will be more and more active and they will appreciate the efforts of the students. Teachers will need to be trained on pedagogy and child psychology.

Nick M and Johan.

We are from the Netherlands.

We have read your question. It’s a very interesting question and we hope we can give you the right answer.

When we where born there where computers. So we can’t imagine a world without computers. The world would be very boring. Our generation works with computers if we can. It’s finer to work with and it’s easy to understand because not everyone’s handwriting is so good on the computer it’s all easy to read. If you want to stimuli us you can give us assignments on the computer.

what we could stimulate to learn better is working more with computers and give us assignments that we can do on the computer. It’s more fun working on the computer because you can listen to the music or chat with your friends. It’s a good derivation. If you don’t like school you can chat with your friends or listen to the music. You don’t watch the time the whole time you just make it.

Another thing you can do to stimuli is: learn teachers how to work with computers. If they want to give you an assignment it doesn’t take so long to show it on the computer. we can start faster and make our homework in the lesson. If teachers have more skills in the computer they can make nice presentations. It’s easy to understand and very clear. If you want to see the presentation again you just ask the teacher if she/he can send you it. If you have a test you just watch the presentation again. If teachers want to show the class something on the computer, and she/he doesn’t know what to do, will it take so long and the class start to bore. In the time that she/he needs to show it to you. You could al really seen it.

And another thing you can do to stimuli is: make the lessons more exciting. We want to do something. We don’t want to sit there and read a book. We want to do something. play games in the class. Not the games like you do on your computer but games that fit to the lesson. as a sum in mathematics but it must be a difficult one. Not 1+1. The first one that knows the answer wins. It’s a nice way to learn and lots of students will enjoy it. give us a challenge. We don’t want to do something we all really know. We want to do something where we have to think for. Where we have to work for and get a reward. It’s always nice to get rewards or compliments. Compliments give you the feeling you have reached(or goanna reach) something that’s special. All though give rewards more the feeling you are special. But both of them makes you feel you do something good and it’s always nice to hear/get one. If you do something good and someone gives you a compliment, you feel proud and want to do it even better that everyone is jealous. It just feels so good.

At school, we use a couple of really helpful websites that help us learn foreign languages.
- Magister (www.20ek.swp.nl)
On magister can you see everything that’s related to school. You can check your homework and your grades online. But also matters such as the days you have called in sick or how often you were late at school.

- WRTS (www.wrts.nl)
On wrts can you learn your vocabulary for English, French and German. You can test yourself before you will get the real test at school.

- Google (www.google.com)
If you want to find something you’re looking for real easily, you can search it on google. We think that you guys also use Google just like we do!

The most important types of stimuli would be of sight, hearing and touch.  This is the best way a child can learn. Learners accross the world in are getting better at using technology and they are even better that their own parents.  If a father needs to change his ringtone on his cellphone his child will do it faster than the parent will.  In the classroom we need to have more technological things these days.  It helps us to learn faster and better by seeing and listening to videos, pictures and songs while we learn.  We learn better by seeing, listening and touching things.  This is the responsibility of the school to have the various types of technology in the classroom to make us learn better and better.  We can not leave this out, learning would be very boring and learners would rather switch off than to listen to anything the teachers is saying of showing if it is not connected to technological things.

What types /Forms are required to educate this digital generation

In our opinion, we think well-furbished ICT centres with teachers will encourage people to visit and use the available resources. In addition, there should be house-to-house education, advertisement on TV and radio, in the newspapers and launching of educational programmes. We also think availability of games and animations videos on educational issues in schools will also go along way to help in educating digital generation.

What types / forms of stimuli are required to educate this digital generation?

To be able to answer this question we did a survey in which we asked students in our school: what things could improve your learning?

We interviewed thirty people out of whom:

  • o   Fifteen answered – a notebook instead of copybooks
  • o   Seven answered – the interactive blackboard
  • o   Nine answered – more subjects taught with a use of the computer

The interactive blackboard is a large interactive desktop that connects to a computer and projector.

The board is typically hang on the wall.

“The notebook instead of copybooks” is the most frequent response in thequestionnaire.

Most Polish students do not use it, because it is too expensive for them to buy.

In our schoolwe also writein copybooks. However the Polish government is currently discussing introducing notebooks in primary school for the first grade pupils.

Teaching subjects with a use of the computer

In our school we use the computer only on one subject: Information Technology. All our student books include CD-Rom’s to be used at home. It would be great if we could use them at school but unfortunately there are not enough computers for all.

There is also an idea to study in a form of e-learning. E-learning is “the delivery of a learning, training or education program by electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in some way to provide training, educational or learning material”. (Derek Stockley 2003; source: http://derekstockley.com.au/elearning-definition.html). With e-learning we can save a lot of time. It's convenient for students and helps them communicate with each other.

Major disadvantage of e-learning is a lack of personal contact among students and between the teacher and the class.

QUESTION

What types / forms of stimuli are required to educate this digital generation?

ANSWER

Stimuli for educating digital generation are of great importance. We can start at digital equipment school can provide for pupils. All the classrooms at our school are equipped with computers, some of them also with interactive boards. Some lessons can also be held in the computer classroom - there are enough computers for every pupil to use. Some students take the optional subject Information Technology.

The role of teachers is important, too. If they know how to use digital devices lessons can be more interesting. But we think it is not smart to use digital devices too often because teenagers can get bored very fast. It is interesting if teachers give us homework for which we have to surf the Internet. Some teachers have their own web pages and they upload exercises, games, songs etc. One class is exchanging e-mails with a Polish class. This stimulates us - something different, just as our project about Digital Generation is.

So to help us and make our studying interesting, our teachers propouse us to take part in different international progects. With it's help I can find a lot of friends around the world and study at the same time.
